Efficacy and Safety of Piroxicam in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis





Abstract
Authors reviewed 33 cases of osteoarthritis treated with Piroxicam to evaluate efficacy and safety of the drug..
Patient. selection and clinical study were done according to Pfizer protocol.
Duration of treatment was 12 weeks and the dosage was single . oral administration of 20 mgg after breakfast.
Following results were abserved
1) The mean % reduction in pain was 54% at the of 12 weeks and that of "stiffness sensation" was 50%.
2) There were improvement of "general feeling" in 93% of the cases and improvement of "ease of movement" in 87% by the patient¢¥s self-assessment.
3) At investigators¢¥ final evaluation, about 90% showed inprovement -in joint -involvement. The efficacy of piroxicam was marked or moderate in 65% of 30 cases, and, the. toleration was excellent or good in 8:i%c.
4) There were no significant side effects other than mild abdominal discomfort. Our present study suggested% this new nonsteroidal. anti-inflamatory drug could be another choice for osteoarthf tis with reasonable efficacy and fewer. side effects.
